Sunrise with Sea Monsters, Joseph Mallord William Turner c. 1845

It was a beautifully sunny day in York today, and it finally seems like spring is breaking through the wintry clouds which have still been looming over the city this week. In honour of the spring skies, I thought I’d share one of my favourite artists. Turner’s skies are notoriously striking, and I absolutely love the colours in this one. Though it is suspected that the ‘sea monsters’ were in fact just supposed to be fish, I love the magical suggestion of the title.

Happy spring!

  2. Turner is one of my favourite artists too. Best has to be Rain, Steam and Speed – The Great Western Railway though.
